Is recycling worth the cost?

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

Only about 10% of the waste in Cincinnati is currently recycled. The Mayor has issued a challenge to raise recycling in the city, and now City Council is considering extending the city recycling to apartments, condos, and public housing.

The positive is that there will be less recyclable waste going into the landfill and the potential for less frequent trash pickups. The downside is that recycling pickup has a cost.

Council’s plan would also include mandatory recycling at events and festivals. A recent visit to Saturday Night Movie Night at Fountain Square left me with an empty plastic bottle from a Square vendor and nowhere to take it. Bill Donabedian of the Fountain Square team says that permanent recycling will be in place on the Square shortly.

The bottom line is that cost should not be the only factor considered. The real triple bottom line happens when you consider people, the planet, and profits. It should be important to the city to consider the future. The future of available resources, the future of waste management and landfill size, and the future of our health.

I noticed little recycling on the square and at the Taste. Is the city working on that?
