LGC Asks: What about #5 plastic containers?

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

Live Green Cincinnati received a question from a local reader recently, and we need your help to find an answer.

Jessica from Pleasant Ridge asks:
“I was wondering if there is anywhere to recycle those #5 plastic containers (yogurt, margarine, etc.). I get so many of them and I hate throwing them away. “

Rumpke does not currently collect #5 plastics. Does anyone know of a local group/school which can use them - or a DIY projects that makes use of these containers?

Please leave a comment on this post if you have any ideas. I’m sure someone out there in green Cincinnati has an ingenious reuse idea for yogurt and margarine containers!

This doesn’t really answer the question, but to solve the problem…consider making your own yogurt? It’s really easy, you won’t be getting all the chemicals in commercial yogurt, and you won’t generate all that plastic to start out with. And unless you’re a vegan, switch to butter. It’s better for you.

I would suggest posting the item on Freecycle.com. There are a number of school groups that are tapped into this resource and there are frequent requests for other like items (baby food jars, etc.) for craft projects.

I collect a plethora of trays and bowls of this plastic every week from my office as Quiznos & other caterers only use this for some reason. Anyway, I collect them in the basement and give them away on craigslist. Many schools, churches, and other family-owned caterers love these and pick them up regularly. Collect them and give them away - but the best thing to do is write to the company or let them know that you request them to change over to #1 or #2 plastics if they want to see your future business. They have the ability - they just need to see the demand.
